It doesn't take much.....

In a stressful world filled with work and personal commitments, it’s sometimes easy to forget how fortunate we really are. On street corners in every city in the world, there people of all ages fighting for survival, living on the streets, sleeping on cardboard with nothing to eat. These people are not proud of being there, but often have no choice. All it takes is a smile and a little kindness to change that person's day, but all too often, we pass by without noticing, too caught up in our everyday lives.

Hunger is not bound by age, race or religion and we don’t need to do much to make a difference. Something as simple as packing leftover food you might not have finished at dinner and giving it to a person who might not have eaten all day can go a long way.

For those that want to help out in a more organized setting, soup kitchens are a great a way to help the urban poor. It’s a concept that I hope continues to grow throughout Asia. Kechara Soup Kitchen is a great example here in Kuala Lumpur. Volunteers go out every Saturday night and Sunday afternoon in downtown KL to deliver food and offer medical care to over 700 people living on the streets. What the organization also aims to do is to help place unemployed homeless with jobs and accommodation. For those in KL, who want to help, check out the website. http://www.kechara.com/ksk/contact.php

Sometimes, a picture tells a thousand words. Just look at how happy this old lady is. All it took was a smile and a warm meal.

  1. I went yesterday for the first time on a round with the kechara soup kitchen volunteers. I have always meant to for a long time but with our usual busy lives I never got round to it.I am glad I did because although you know there are people who sleep on the streets it puts a different perspective when you actually go and seek them out to give them food! Highly recommended for all to do it as it will make people think and do more.
